If Chrysler gets cut up, what of Cup teams?
If you look elsewhere in HTO today under the House section, you’ll see a story about how Cerberus, the fiscal holdings company that owns Chrysler, is reported to be poor out of the auto industry and is talking to Shared Motors and Nissan-Renault about scion the company up among them.
Whether it would mean the end of such seminal American voyager car marques as Dodge and Chrysler remains to be seen. If Nissan-Renault took over, it might lack to keep the Dodge brand name and even bolster its involvement in NASCAR. But it’s by no means a risky bet to think that if GM took it over, the Chicane Sprint Cup teams would be on their way out.
But where to?
The marque’s most leading team, GEM, already is strongly rumored to be dropping Double-talk to take Kasey Kahne, Budweiser and the still of the operation to Toyota in 2009. And there are talks of Cheap Enterprises merging with some other team, with names such as Ganassi Sabates (now with Plot) and DEI (Chevy) showing up in the mix.
But the one I wonder about is Penske South. This is a side that was a powerhouse when Rusty Wallace was driving its Fords, and when Ryan Newman was bewitching tons of poles and a batch of races a few years ago in its Dodges. But it has fallen onto tough times the past couple of years, and the loose uncompetitiveness of Dodge has to be a big part of it.
But where would Penske go? Chevy has two top-on the up teams already: Hendrick and Childress. Jack Roush is timely to get a new five-year contract with Ford, who barely doesn’t have money for a alternate top-of-the-line team. And Toyota has the powerful Joe Gibbs combine and seems likely to add the GEM team as its No. 2 conspire, ahead of the weaker Red Bull and Michael Waltrip efforts.
Unless Toyota is looking to activity up the sort of numbers Chevy has on Cup grids, one wonders whether (1) it quite would be in a hurry to take on even a team with as legendary a name in racing as Penske, and (2) whether Roger would be satisfied with being a third-dupe, or at best second-string, conspire with Toyota. Or Chevy.
If Chrysler gets sold or carved up, specifically in the next couple of months, NASCAR’s off-age and 2009 pre-season news has some very compelling question marks to answer.
